The "Journey" Began on TVJ's "Your Issues Live"

HIV/AIDS:'Journey to Awareness - End Discrimination"

Journey to Awareness was the Publicity Committee’s project for the club to promote the awareness of HIV/AIDS as well of the message of ending discrimination. This idea was conceptualized at the 2nd Quarter District Conference by Pres Lorna Gooden, Opt Donna Wanliss and The Publicity Chair as we admired our banner which we prepared for the ORAAW 2007 District Competition.

It was decided that the banner (8ft x 4ft) was really too beautiful and its message too important to be kept rolled up in a corner only to be brought out on special occasions. As a result it was agreed that we should target business places to host the banner in their organization for a week - especially businesses where children congregate.

The Journey to Awareness program was kicked off on March 1, 2007 where it was viewed nationally on the very popular current affairs program – Your Issues Live (TVJ). The Publicity Chair, "Gina Rey Forest", was invited on the program in her capacity as a performance poet to perform one her pieces related to HIV/AIDS. The opportunity was seized to ask the producer if this medium could be used to start the Journey to Awareness program and they happily agreed. As a matter of fact they gave the banner prominence by placing it on the fence behind the stage so that it could be in the view of the camera and the audience at all times. It is interesting to note that the program was re-broadcast and sections of our banner were repeatedly shown in close-up. Due to the late start of the show, the Publicity Chair was not interviewed about the project – however afterwards she was interviewed by Mr David Muhammad of the Jamaica News Network

The Journey began in the Mandela Park – Half Way Tree – as mentioned earlier. It is important to note that the “Your Issues Live” program has a wide sponsorship base as a result of its large number of viewers. After the program, which lasted for about one hour, we distributed posters to the public and I must point out that they went like ‘hot bread’. Many teachers were present and took posters for their schools as well as others took for their youth centers, and nurses took for their health centers. However, due to the rush we were unable to get the names of the various institutions.

Of note – is that one man came up to Publicity Chair and after receiving a poster said that he was HIV positive and that he loved the message of both our banner and poster. He took some to distribute in his community.

We distributed approximately 150 posters. In attendance were: Pres Lorna, Opt Sylvia "Gina Rey Forest", Opt Dianne, VP Michael and Opt Dudley who took pictures.

Press Release of Medical Fair

Demonstration of service above self

There was islandwide rains for two days before the event, with more rains forecasted for the weekend.

Publicity was obtained on the television morning programme, CVM @ Sunrise. The representatives on the programme were President Lorna, Sunset Kingston and President Elect Nicole, Trafalgar.

In the true spirit of optimism, the Sunset Optimist Club of Kingston and the Trafalgar Optimist Club of Kingston successfully staged the medical fair we dubbed ‘Healthy Bodies Make Healthy Minds’ on August 11, 2007, despite persistent showers of rain and overcast skies.

As the heavens opened, the volunteer doctors and nurses, dozens of students and parents, as well as corporate entities such as NCB Insurance, Wisynco Group and the Child Development Agency (CDA) were in no mood to be defeated by the inclement weather.

All pitched in to make the event worthwhile and to ensure that all who attended were feted with goodie bags, refreshment and good music.

My statement for the day was: “I prefer to be present and have no one participate, than to not be present and persons attend, only to be disappointed”.

We indeed did not disappoint, the 51 persons who attended (including parents), particularly the parent who arrived at 8:30am.

The Optimist CreedThird tenet - To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
Purposes of Optimist International Fifth purpose - To aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.

It was indeed a test of our Optimist Creed and a testimony to our purpose as optimists.

The reception was well attended by members and golfers. We were hosted at the Fraser Fontaine and Kong Parking lot, much thanks to Past President Dale for securing this location.

The evening was well organised and much appreciation was expressed by the golfers at the numerous awards presented by the club.

The highlight of the evening however was the presentation of the overall winner's prize to Mr. Tomoe Mourikawa (centre photo with wife), who vocally expressed his delight, hands outstretched, shouting in Japanese "Thank, you, Thank you so much"; this was a sight to behold. This was especially pleasing as Mr. Mourikawa was last year's third place winner, as well as the fact that this will be his last year in Jamaica. He stated that this is a wonderful gift to take home with him.

A representative of a sponsor, Pan Caribbean, expressed her gratification at being there to see this reaction, and commented to sponsoring again next year.

President's Year in Review 2006 - 2007

I would like to start by first thanking the members Sunset for giving me the opportunity to lead this wonderful group. Without your support, help and guidance I certainly would not have succeeded. Special thanks to the team; my Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Presidents, Directors and Committee Chairs, your hard work was much appreciated.

The year started out with the team being prepared and ready to go. We started our planning two months prior to the commencement of the administrative year. All were provided with objectives and were prepared with their strategy for activities.

Publicity Committee

It was one of my main objectives to increase the visibility of the club and by extension the work of Optimism.

The Publicity Committee, chaired by Optimist Sylvia “Gina Rey” Straw, played an important role. Optimist Sylvia and her team continued to fly the Sunset flag high on the worldwide web, through the club’s blog Rays of Sunshine. Through her guidance, the team also developed and maintained a membership database.

Participation or sponsorship of a health awareness program was another objective. The club selected HIV/AIDS awareness for this program. Publicity Chair developed a campaign geared towards children. The plan was to design a poster with child friendly messages of acceptance, as well as dispelling myths about HIV/AIDS.

The design, a photograph of children within the HIV/AIDS symbol, to be modeled by children of members, was accepted by the membership. The next step was to seek sponsorship. This was obtained at the end of the first quarter from Supreme Ventures Limited and 2500 posters printed.

The poster campaign dovetailed into a HIV/AIDS banner competition organised by the District. Each club was charged with designing a banner which had eight short messages spelling out the word OPTIMIST.

The banner was taken on what was dubbed “Journey to Awareness”, were Corporate entities were asked to host the banner for a period of a week, as well as distribute posters. The “Journey” commenced on Television Jamaica’s (TVJ) “Your Issues Live” program - March 1, 2007. The banner was prominently displayed during the one hour program with the topic being HIV/AIDS. Our Publicity Chair as well as our own advocate for persons living with the disease were guests on the program.

Many thanks to the companies who hosted the banner; Optimist Donnah Wanliss, who also helped to develop the “Journey”, was the first to host at her store, Woolworth New Kingston. The other companies were Island Car Rental and Supreme Ventures Limited-HWT. Approximately 1800 children benefited from this program.

The Journey ended with a letter to the editor of the Daily Gleaner highlighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Jamaica. The letter was also posted on the Gleaner’s website.

  1. Musgrave girls were beneficiaries of clothing, after the fire at the home, donated by our overseas members.

The above schools, home and other projects benefited for our regular holiday treats which was conducted for Christmas at a cost of $40,000.

With the main objective for this Committee being to conduct a needs assessment and develop one new program for the year, the committee chair, Director Winsome Cousins, set to work. The team dreamt of staging a Health Fair, geared towards assisting needy children within the community, fulfill the medical requirement for high school entrance.

Even though corporate sponsorship was not what we hoped, the team was not deterred. An alliance was also forged wit the Optimist Club of Trafalgar, in order to obtain the services of medical Practitioners, free of cost.

The Fair occurred on August 11, 2007 in the midst of torrential rain. Approximately 51 persons benefited from this project at a cost of $260,000 for which we obtained $220,000 in donations and other financial support.

Youth appreciation week

This was conducted during November 12 to 18, 2007. The week started with the membership sharing in a church service with the girls from Wortley Home at The Good Shepherd Church. Students at risk from the St. Andrew High School for Girls were taken on a visit to the Fort Augusta Women’s Prison. Another group of children was taken on an educational tour of the Ban of Jamaica. Members visited Walkers Home of Safety with students from Duhaney Park Primary School to Read /Play Games. The total cost or this project was $25,000

New Club Building Committee

The club formed another Club in February 2007after the hard work and input of DOG Cecille Hale. Our baby called itself The Zenith Optimist Club of New Kingston and started with 25 members. Zenith is a vibrant club and is already on the Honor Roll. The cost of building this club was $30,000.

Fundraising Committee

It goes without saying, that without fundraising, the club could not finance its activities; as such it is the most important committee.

The first fundraiser was gained through the proceeds from a night at the play “Uptown Bangarang” in March 2007. It is safe to say that everyone in attendance enjoyed themselves.

Sunset is a club which enjoys putting fun in our fundraisers and so the next event was an Oldies Party held at Pricilla’s Club in May 2007. Also in that month the club added some fun to our last general meeting, by holding a Joint Dutch Auction with Kingston Breakfast Club.

Our annual golf tournament was staged in June 2007 and was a tremendous success despite the Herman Cup Tournament staged in Montego Bay, distracting a number of our regular players.

Our final fundraiser was conducted in September 2007, with the proceeds going specifically to an exceptional cancer survivor.

Closing Remarks

The past year was challenging, exciting, rewarding and fulfilling. I look forward to working with everyone in the next phase of my Optimist Life.

One Love

President Lorna Gooden

It must not affect me, It will not affect me, It must not defeat me

The words of Col. Anthony "Bunny" Stearns O.D. (seen second from left). He was introduced to the club by Major Errol Allman a Distinguished Past Governor of the Optimist Club. Major Allman went on to describe the distinguished career of a brilliant pilot and pioneer leaving us awestruck as we listened to his litany of achievements. He kept us in suspense with hints of a "disability" and I am sure I was not alone in wondering what it is about this man that could be considered a disability. Col Stearns gave no hint of anything as he sat and listened to his introduction, laughing intermittently to the various funny anecdotes by Major Allman.

He took his turn at the "podium" (used loosely here) and started to speak about his challenges, the feelings he experienced as he began to lose his sight. He spoke about adjusting his life to meet this challenge, learning new things to help him cope, how he is now capable of "listening to the heart" of those he meets as he is unable to see them and therefore form any judgement. In his own words "when I meet someone I form no opinions".

He stayed for the rest of meeting, laughing and enjoying our antics. We are Sunsetters after all and we must have fun.

I am sure I am not alone when I say - I left that meeting feeling richer for the experience of having heard him speak. A true optimist.
